1.What is Tesla Active Hood?
Tesla Active Hood Feature Explained in the Updated Model 3
The Active Hood is engineered to enhance pedestrian safety in the event of a collision. When the system detects an impact with a pedestrian or cyclist, it automatically raises the hood, increasing the space between the hood and the vehicle’s underlying components. This added gap helps to cushion the impact, reducing the severity of potential injuries.
2. How does the Tesla Active Hood work?
The Active Hood system relies on a pyrotechnic device to rapidly lift the rear edge of the hood if a pedestrian collision occurs. This sudden elevation creates extra space between the hood and the vehicle’s rigid engine components, which helps absorb and lessen the force of the impact. Additionally, by raising the hood, the system helps to dissipate some of the collision’s energy, offering further protection and reducing the risk of injury.
According to the Tesla owner’s manual, “When the Model 3 is traveling at speeds between 30 and 52 kilometers per hour, sensors at the front of the vehicle detect a collision with a pedestrian. In response, the rear edge of the hood automatically lifts by about 80 millimeters, creating extra space between the hood and the vehicle’s underlying components, which helps reduce the risk of pedestrian injury.”
Tesla further explains that the system uses a combination of sensors and algorithms to determine whether the Active Hood should be activated. As a result, it can be triggered not only in pedestrian collisions but also in accidents involving animals, other vehicles, or objects. Alternatively, it may remain inactive even in pedestrian collisions, depending on the situation.
While this feature was previously available on Tesla’s Model S and Model X, it was only detailed in the European owner’s manual. Now, it has been integrated into the updated Model 3, although it is not mentioned in the U.S. version of the Model 3 manual. It’s worth noting that this type of safety technology isn’t exclusive to Tesla—other automakers have implemented similar systems as well.
Adri, a Model X owner, pointed out that the updated Model 3 also includes various other active and passive safety features. These include dual dampers in the trunk and metal hooks designed to keep the doors aligned during a collision, adding another layer of protection.
